KUALA LUMPUR - Indonesia is aiming to generate consumer spending of Rp110 trillion by the end of 2025 through nationwide shopping discount programmes at malls and online platforms.
The Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto said the government has rolled out several initiatives to encourage spending, including the National Online Shopping Day and the Shop Locally in Indonesia campaign.
He said these programmes are expected to raise household consumption and support overall economic growth this year.
Airlangga said the Shop Locally in Indonesia campaign, organised by the Indonesian Retail and Tenant Association across member malls, is targeting transactions of up to Rp30 trillion by January 4, next year.
He added that the National Online Shopping Day, held from December 10 to December 16, recorded Rp35 trillion in transactions.
Airlangga said discounts under the programmes can reach up to 50%, with additional discounts of up to 25% and cashback offers of up to 10 per cent to attract shoppers.
He also highlighted tourism as a key driver of consumer spending, noting growing interest in shopping tourism among foreign visitors.
“Especially among Malaysian tourists, who often combine leisure trips with shopping and travel on the Whoosh high-speed rail,” he said.
Airlangga added that shopping centres are being encouraged to play a wider economic role, including serving as productive spaces for people who work remotely.
