JAKARTA - East Asia and the Pacific recorded 19.65 million internal displacements in 2025, equal to 31.6% of the global total, according to the 2026 Global Report on Internal Displacement published by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre on May 12. The regional count included 17.53 million disaster displacements and 2.12 million movements linked to conflict and violence.
Disasters drove most of the regional total. IDMC said powerful typhoons and late-year storms that struck densely populated countries, including the Philippines, China and Indonesia, produced the highest disaster displacement figure recorded in East Asia and the Pacific in a decade. The report page said conflict and disaster together pushed the region to its highest displacement level since 2010.
The Philippines posted one of the largest country totals in the report, with 10.743 million disaster displacements in 2025. The same data table listed 71,000 conflict displacements there. Indonesia also appeared among the countries affected by severe storms, though IDMC’s regional summary placed more weight on the wider disaster pattern than on a single national figure.
Conflict displacement rose sharply elsewhere in the region. IDMC recorded 821,000 conflict displacements in Cambodia and 633,000 in Thailand in 2025. The report linked part of that rise to border tensions that re-erupted between the two countries during the year.
South Korea entered the report through wildfire displacement. IDMC said the Republic of Korea recorded its highest ever wildfire displacement figure in 2025, as fires caused unusually large movements in several parts of the world. The report page also listed Korea among its country spotlights for the year.
IDMC director Tracy Lucas warned that the pressure on displaced communities is worsening as protection systems weaken. “As conflicts are intensifying, it is often the same people who are uprooted again and again. Yet the systems meant to protect them are being dismantled,” she said in the report materials.
Worldwide, IDMC counted 62.2 million internal displacement movements in 2025, split between 32.3 million caused by conflict and violence and 29.9 million caused by disasters. The organisation also reported 82.2 million people living in internal displacement at the end of the year.
