KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia will introduce new look passports and MyKad within the next six months as part of efforts to strengthen the security of national identity documents, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

He said the move marks an important milestone, with the Malaysian passport now recognised as one of the most trusted travel documents globally.

“That’s important because our passport is now the third most trusted, measured by the number of countries Malaysian passport holders can travel to without a visa. That is a key benchmark.

“With our passport’s trusted status, Malaysians can expect a new-look passport within six months,” he said at a press conference after the Home Ministry’s 2026 New Year Address last Thursday.

Saifuddin said the upgraded documents will include improved security features to strengthen integrity and ensure passports and MyKad remain current.

“We’ve enhanced these specific security features. The current passport (security features) is already proven, which is why our passport ranks among the world’s top ten.

“But after a certain period, there is a need for the country to issue new security documents,” he added.

He added that the renewal process involves technical specifications prepared and approved by the Immigration Department and the National Registration Department.

Saifuddin Nasution said the government will announce the changes at least six months in advance to avoid a sudden surge in applications.

“Use your existing documents until they expire. Replacement will only be required when the time comes. Implementation dates, features and further announcements will be shared later,” Saifuddin said.

He stressed that upgrading passports and MyKad is essential to improve security and prevent document forgery.
