JAKARTA – Indonesia is stepping up efforts to develop tourism services tailored for senior travellers, positioning the segment as a new driver of economic growth as populations continue to age globally.
The Ministry of Tourism said it is working with industry players, healthcare providers, academic institutions and other stakeholders to build a tourism ecosystem that caters to the specific needs of older visitors.
Ministry spokesperson Nia Niscaya said collaboration across sectors would be key to expanding Indonesia's high-quality tourism offerings.
"Through collaboration among the government, businesses, associations, academia, healthcare professionals, and the public, we are optimistic that developing senior tourism will open up new economic opportunities and expand the high-quality tourism market," she told Antara on July 26.
She said the initiative could also strengthen Indonesia's position as a leading tourism destination in the region and globally.
According to Nia, senior-friendly tourism is designed for older travellers who require services adapted to their physical, psychological and social needs.
The concept emphasises accessible facilities, flexible travel itineraries and environments that support visitors' health and wellbeing.
To support the sector, the ministry is promoting the development of tourism infrastructure that accommodates senior travellers while ensuring access to medical and wellness services during their trips.
"To realize this, the Ministry of Tourism is not only focusing on the development of destinations but also on building a business ecosystem that can thoroughly meet the needs of senior tourists," she said.
The ministry is also seeking to improve service standards, strengthen workforce competencies and encourage tourism operators to provide facilities that enable safer and more comfortable travel experiences for older visitors.
In addition, it is supporting the development of integrated tour packages combining cultural and nature-based attractions with wellness programmes and healthy dining options.
Nia said the holistic approach would allow travellers to enjoy experiences that promote their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.
She expressed hope that Indonesia would become recognised not only for its natural and cultural attractions, but also as a destination offering high-quality wellness and senior-friendly tourism services.
