SEOUL - Seoul has extended the nomination period for its Honorary Citizenship programme until July 24, inviting residents and organisations to recommend foreigners who have made significant contributions to the South Korean capital, as reported by The Korea Herald.
Introduced in 1958, the programme recognises foreigners who have helped enhance Seoul's development and international profile in areas such as the economy, culture, education and social welfare.
To date, 968 individuals from 100 countries have been awarded honorary citizenship.
Recipients may serve as advisers to the Seoul Metropolitan Government and participate in various municipal programmes and official events.
Nominees are generally required to have lived in Seoul for at least three consecutive years or a cumulative total of five years.
However, individuals who do not meet the residency requirement may still be considered if they have made exceptional contributions to the city.
Nominations may be submitted by the speaker of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, heads of public or civic organisations, or groups of at least 30 Seoul residents.
Applicants must submit a nomination form detailing the candidate's personal information, career and contributions in either Korean or English, together with supporting documents including a photograph, foreign resident registration certificate, honorary citizenship pledge, consent form for the use of personal information and other relevant materials.
Documents can be submitted to the city's Urban Diplomacy Division in person, by post or via email.
The award ceremony is expected to be held between November and December.
Honorary citizens receive a certificate and medal, free admission to selected public attractions including Seoul Grand Park, the Seoul Museum of History, Seoul Botanic Park and the Seoul Museum of Art, and may also be appointed to advisory committees and invited to city-hosted events.
