KUALA LUMPUR - Phu Quoc, voted Asia’s most beautiful island by readers of Condé Nast Traveler, welcomed 82,000 foreign tourists during the Hung Kings' Commemoration Day and Reunification Day–Labour Day holidays, marking a 90 per cent increase year-on-year.
Vietnam’s largest island, located in An Giang Province, recorded a total of 309,600 visitors over the seven-day holiday period from April 25 to 27 and April 30 to May 3.
This represented a 34 per cent increase compared with the same period last year, according to the provincial Department of Tourism.
Phu Quoc has emerged as a bright spot in Vietnam’s tourism sector amid a broader recovery in international travel.
The island received more than one million international arrivals in the first four months of 2026, reflecting a 61.5 per cent rise year-on-year.
This figure accounts for nearly half of its annual target, with authorities aiming to attract two million foreign visitors by the end of the year.
Beyond Phu Quoc, other coastal destinations such as Da Nang, Thanh Hoa, Nha Trang and Quang Ninh also recorded strong tourist inflows during the holiday period.
Ha Long Bay, located in Quang Ninh, remained a major draw for both domestic and international visitors.
The surge in travel was partly driven by holidaymakers seeking respite from an early summer heatwave across the region.
Average hotel occupancy rates nationwide reached between 65 and 70 per cent during the period.
Key seaside destinations reported occupancy levels exceeding 90 per cent, underscoring strong seasonal demand.
