JAKARTA - Despite Jakarta's public transport network now covering 92 percent of the city, just 23.6 percent of residents use it regularly, Governor Pramono Anung acknowledged on Wednesday, calling for satellite cities to stop leaving Jakarta to foot the bill alone.

Speaking in Jakarta on February 25 and quoted by Indonesia’s state-owned agency Antara, Pramono said price, comfort, and punctuality were the keys to pulling people out of private vehicles.

"Hopefully the offerings of cheap transport, good facilities, and punctuality, that's important, will make people then switch to using public transport," he said.

He also flagged a habit he wants to break, where outer-city commuters drive into Jakarta before switching to transit.

"What I hope is that the park-and-ride is near each person's home," Pramono said, adding that he plans to negotiate with Bekasi, Tangerang, Depok, and Bogor to build feeder stops nearby. He noted that Jakarta currently covers all transit subsidies and infrastructure on its own.

"Don't let everything become Jakarta's burden," he said.

Ridership numbers from 2025 suggest the push is gaining traction. Transjakarta, MRT, and LRT Jakarta combined carried 461 million passengers last year, up 16.65 percent from 402 million in 2024, according to BP BUMD DKI Jakarta head Syaefuloh Hidayat, speaking at a budget press conference at Balai Kota on January 21, 2026.

Six new routes and 327 additional buses were also added during the year, and 25.58 million trips were taken for free under a program covering 15 categories of residents.
