JAKARTA - Up to 1,500 foreign nationals apply for Indonesian citizenship each year, Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas claimed on July 21.

Supratman described 1,000 to 1,500 as the highest annual volume of applications. He separately said about 300 applications to relinquish Indonesian citizenship had been filed “up to now,” without specifying the period or procedural stage covered by that figure.

“Even then, not all of them will necessarily be approved,” he said at the parliament complex in Jakarta, as quoted by Indonesia’s state-owned news agency Antara.

The figures were disclosed during questions about higher citizenship service charges introduced under Government Regulation No. 30 of 2026.

From August 1, an ordinary naturalisation application will cost Rp75 million, while naturalisation based on marriage will cost Rp25 million. An application to the president for loss of citizenship at the applicant’s own request will cost Rp5 million.

Supratman said the previous tariffs had remained unchanged for almost a decade. The ordinary naturalisation fee will rise from Rp50 million, while the charge for voluntary loss of citizenship will increase from Rp1 million.

Applications to relinquish citizenship undergo checks by about 14 to 15 ministries and state agencies, Supratman said. He added that the additional revenue would help the Ministry of Law maintain its digital systems and hundreds of public services.

The reports of Supratman’s remarks, however, did not include a breakdown explaining how the annual estimate was calculated.

A separate Ministry of Law release recorded 265 ordinary applications in 2024 and 147 in 2025. The ministry said more than 700 foreign applicants still had files under processing in February.
