KUALA LUMPUR - The Tourism and Sports Ministry said the government’s plan to reduce visa-free stays from 60 days to 30 days is unlikely to affect tourism, as most foreign visitors spend less than a month in the country.
Permanent Tourism and Sports Secretary Natthriya Thaweevong said a committee established by the prime minister is reviewing visa measures, including the current 60-day visa-free entry for visitors from 93 countries.
She said the ministry had submitted supporting research to the committee, which is expected to recommend shortening the visa-free period, as reported by Bangkok Post.
According to her, the ministry agreed in principle to the reduction to close loopholes that could be abused by foreign criminals or individuals involved in illegal activities.
“This change should not impact tourism, as foreign tourists on average stay in Thailand for 21 days at most.
“If they want to stay longer than 30 days, they can simply apply for an extension as normal,” she said.
Natthriya said the caretaker government has the authority to approve the proposal, as a new administration has yet to be formed.
The visa-free scheme allowing visitors from 93 countries to remain in Thailand for up to 60 days was introduced in mid-2024.
She said the proposed change followed requests from tourism operators last year to curb criminal activity and strengthen the industry’s safety image.
