JAKARTA - Indonesia is banking on the return of GT World Challenge Asia in early May 2026 to drive tourism to Mandalika International Circuit, Lombok.
Commercial Director of InJourney, Veronica H. Sisilia, said the event is expected to boost Mandalika’s global visibility and serve as a “key driver” of tourism demand, noting participation of 46 drivers from 17 countries.
“Going forward, this event is expected to not only elevate Mandalika's position as a leading destination but also make a real contribution to regional economic growth,” said Sisilia in a written statement.
Acting CEO of InJourney Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), Ahmad Fajar, added that recurring international events have already created a “multiplier effect,” including higher hotel occupancy, MSME growth, and new investment interest.
“GT World Challenge Asia is an important catalyst in strengthening Mandalika's position as a world-class sports tourism destination,” Fajar said.
While ITDC did not release specific figures for the GT event, market data from comparable Mandalika races show a clear tourism impact. During MotoGP’s October 2025 stop in Lombok, hotel occupancy reached 100% in Mandalika and around 90 to 93% across Lombok, alongside over 140,000 spectators and a Rp4.96 trillion economic impact.
The 2026 GT World Challenge Asia is expected to feature 23 GT3 cars and drivers from major markets including China, Japan, France, and the United States, with cultural performances involving 500 local talents.
The GT racing competition will hold rounds 3 and 4 at Mandalika from May 2–3, 2026, following test sessions starting April 30 and practice on May 1, with two main races scheduled on Saturday (Race 1 at 13:30 local time) and Sunday (Race 2 at 11:30).
The 4.31 km circuit features 17 turns and will host GT3 manufacturers including Audi, BMW, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mercedes-AMG, Nissan, and Porsche, supported by partners such as AWS, Pirelli, and TotalEnergies.
