KUALA LUMPUR - A total of 27 foreign nationals involved in telecom fraud and other criminal activities have been repatriated from Myanmar to their respective countries, authorities said.
The group comprised 21 Chinese nationals, two Nepalis, two Indians and one Nigerian, who had illegally entered Myanmar through border routes and were engaged in online gambling, online scams and other criminal acts, as reported by Global New Light Of Myanmar.
The repatriation was carried out in accordance with the law and through international cooperation, with authorities citing humanitarian considerations and the importance of maintaining friendly relations between countries.
To facilitate the swift return of the foreign nationals, relevant departments conducted personal information verification and record collection procedures.
The process was closely monitored and coordinated by Lt-Col San Shwe, a member of the Myawady District Administration and Management Committee, along with other officials.
The Myanmar government said it continues to actively identify and apprehend foreigners involved in online scam centres and transnational criminal networks.
It added that Myanmar is working closely with neighbouring countries, regional partners and international organisations to strengthen law enforcement cooperation and ensure effective action against such crimes.
