KUALA LUMPUR - Indonesia’s Minister for the Protection of Migrant Workers (KP2MI), Mukhtarudin, has asked the Sukabumi city government to promptly draft two local regulations on the placement and protection of migrant workers.
The request was conveyed directly to Sukabumi Mayor, Ayep Zaki during a meeting at the P2MI Ministry office.
“This meeting is a strategic step to strengthen cooperation between the central and local governments.
“So that the placement and protection of migrant workers from Sukabumi can be safer and more structured,” Mukhtarudin said.
He said that in line with President Prabowo’s directive, the ministry is focusing on improving protection for migrant workers before, during and after employment, while also upgrading their skills so they can enter middle to high skilled sectors.
Mukhtarudin added that strong local-level regulations are crucial to ensure protection goes beyond paperwork and is truly felt by workers and their families.
Meanwhile, Ayep said migrant worker protection in Sukabumi will also be reinforced through the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the P2MI Ministry and the city government.
