KUALA LUMPUR - Jeonbuk National University has introduced a real-time interpretation system to better support its international students.

The university said the system enables foreign students to attend classes alongside Korean peers with minimal language barriers.

“Students enrolled in Introduction to Childcare and Education, one of our academic courses, are made up of 30 Korean, 13 Chinese and two Uzbek students.

“The system bridges language gaps between students from different countries,” the university said in a press release, as reported by The Korea Times.

The most significant changes have been observed in classroom settings.

The university said Chinese students are now able to follow lectures more easily with the interpretation system in place.

This has helped narrow language barriers and foster a more global learning environment.

The improvement is particularly notable for students with limited Korean proficiency.

The university said such courses are gaining attention as pathways to further academic progression.

They also serve as a pipeline for long-term settlement in the region.

Of the 15 international students enrolled in the course, five are preparing to transfer to the Department of Child Studies next semester.

The university said even small classroom interactions are influencing students’ academic and career decisions.

This reflects a broader institutional strategy to attract international students and support their integration into local communities.

The Department of Child Studies has expanded its efforts through dedicated play therapy programmes tailored for international students.

Kim Tae-yeon, a professor in the department, said student engagement has been encouraging.

“It is most fulfilling to see them show a desire to pursue further studies within the department.

“I intend to continue building an environment where all students can learn as equals, regardless of language or nationality, providing a foundation for international students to settle in the local community,” she said.
