KUALA LUMPUR - South Korea’s newly appointed ambassador to Cambodia, Kim Chang-yong, reaffirmed Seoul’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation during a courtesy call on National Assembly President Khuon Sudary, last Thursday.

The meeting, held at the National Assembly Palace, focused on expanding cooperation at both legislative and executive levels between the two countries.

Sudary welcomed Ambassador Kim and expressed confidence that his tenure would further strengthen the bilateral relationship built on mutual trust and shared interests.

She said the strategic partnership could be deepened through greater cooperation in cultural exchange, education and tourism.

“Our ancient civilisations highlight the potential for deeper cooperation through cultural exchange, education, and tourism,” Sudary said.

She also called for South Korea’s support in technical and digital training for National Assembly Secretariat officials to improve legislative efficiency.

Sudary highlighted Cambodia’s ‘Pentagonal Strategy Phase 1’, which prioritises human resource development, and requested the continuation of scholarship programmes for Cambodian students.

Ambassador Kim briefed Sudary on projects supported by South Korea’s Official Development Assistance, including efforts to strengthen governance and security.

He praised Cambodia’s recent crackdown on transnational crime and cyber scams, noting that it helps build confidence among South Korean tourists and investors.

Kim said South Korea is ready to assist Cambodia in strengthening its capacity to combat online fraud and related crimes.

On regional humanitarian concerns, Kim announced that South Korea is preparing to provide USD500,000 in aid through UNICEF Cambodia.

The funds will support displaced families and children affected by recent border tensions.

Kim also sought Cambodia’s support for South Korea’s candidate in the upcoming Inter-Parliamentary Union secretary general election, a request that was received positively.
