JAKARTA - Heavy rain and thunderstorms caused flooding across parts of Jakarta on Monday morning, disrupting traffic and affecting residential neighbourhoods as commuters made their way to work on January 12, 2026.
BPBD Jakarta reported 10 neighborhood units and 23 roads underwater as of 10am. South Jakarta bore the brunt with 8 flooded neighborhoods. Cilandak Timur got hit the worst with water reaching 95 centimeters after Kali Krukut river overflowed. Cipete Utara saw 70 centimeters of flooding across 3 neighborhoods, also from the Krukut overflow. Cilandak Barat and Duren Tiga each had one neighborhood flooded at 40 centimeters.
In North Jakarta, two neighborhoods in Tanjung Priok dealt with 20 centimeters of water.
Traffic police chief Dhanar Dhono Vernandhie said congestion hit toll exits at Podomoro and Sunter the hardest. Drivers trying to get back onto surface streets found themselves stuck because the arterial roads below were underwater.
Twenty-three roads remained impassable across the city. In North Jakarta alone, flooded streets included Jalan Anggrek in Rawa Badak Utara, Jalan Walang Baru in Tugu Utara, Jalan Rorotan, and Jalan Taman Stasiun in Tanjung Priok.
Multiple streets in Pegangsaan Dua went underwater including roads near Yakobus church, Greenhill Apartment, and RJTM. The Koja area saw seven streets flooded. Other affected roads included Jalan Yos Sudarso near Altira, Sunter Indah Raya, and several streets in Jagakarsa.
The disaster agency sent crews to monitor flood levels and coordinate pumping operations. Workers focused on clearing drains and keeping water channels open so floods would recede faster. Officials warned residents in low-lying areas to stay alert as weather forecasts predicted more rain ahead.
This is a developing story that will progress over the course of the day.
