KUALA LUMPUR - The Indonesian Minister for Migrant Worker Protection (KP2MI) Mukhtarudin has set aside Rp1.5 billion to support Indonesian migrant workers affected by a residential fire in Hong Kong, the Lingkar TV reported.
“The total amount is approximately Rp1.5 billion, which we will distribute according to existing government mechanisms,” Mukhtarudin said during the launch of the Bantuan Migran Peduli Sumatera programme at the KP2MI office in Jakarta, last Friday.
He detailed that each affected worker would receive compensation, with families of deceased or sick workers receiving Rp20 million, while survivors without injuries would get Rp10 million.
“For those who passed away, it may be given to their heirs, for the sick, we will deliver it to them there, for those impacted but safe, we will hand it over on-site. Each according to their rights,” added Mukhtarudin.
He also noted that migrant workers already registered with the Employment Social Security Agency (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan) would still receive aid according to the policies of the agency.
“For migrant workers who are identified and registered with us and also with BPJS, they certainly have protection rights and social security from BPJS Ketenagakerjaan,” he emphasized.
The massive fire at the Wang Fuk Court apartment complex in Tai Po, Hong Kong, on 26 November 2025, killed at least 159 people, injured 79, and left 31 missing.
According to the latest data from Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, nine Indonesian nationals died in the fire, 129 survived, one remains under medical care, and one is still missing.
A total of 140 Indonesians, all working in domestic roles, resided in the Wang Fuk Court complex.
Authorities have detained 21 individuals from the main contractor, subcontractors for scaffolding and fire alarms, and technical consultants in connection with the fire.
Investigators suspect that bamboo scaffolding and plastic window coverings caused the fire to spread rapidly, engulfing several floors within minutes.
