KUALA LUMPUR – Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that nine of its citizens died in a massive fire at Hong Kong’s Wang Fuk Court apartment complex on 26 November.
Three other Indonesian nationals were reported injured in the incident, the ministry added.
Authorities confirmed 146 deaths and 79 injuries, marking it as one of Hong Kong’s deadliest urban fires in recent history, Antara News reported.
Hong Kong police have detained 11 individuals believed to be connected to the blaze.
The Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong said around 140 Indonesians, all domestic workers, were employed in the Wang Fuk Court area, with nearly half accounted for.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang said the consulate has set up a special task force to assist and coordinate with victims’ families in Indonesia.
The team is responsible for providing support, answering inquiries, and liaising with local authorities.
Yvonne added that some victims have been identified, while others require further verification, including DNA testing from relatives.
Authorities have not yet announced a schedule for the repatriation of the victims’ remains.
