KUALA LUMPUR - The Lao government has set a goal to attract 22 million foreign tourists over the next five years, generating an estimated USD8 billion in revenue.
The target exceeds the 20.1 million foreign and domestic visitors recorded over the past five years, reflecting the government’s aim to make tourism a key driver of economic growth.
Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone announced the goal while presenting the draft report on the 9th five-year National Socio-economic Development Plan (2021-2025) and the 10th Plan (2026-2030) at the 12th National Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party last week.
To achieve this, Minister of Culture and Tourism Suanesavanh Vignaket said the ministry will focus on upgrading infrastructure at key tourist sites across the country.
The ministry also plans to improve tourism sites to higher standards through collaboration among the government, businesses, and local communities to enhance the visitor experience.
New facilities will be built and existing attractions improved along tourism routes linking provinces within Laos and to neighbouring countries, she added.
These projects will be part of closer collaboration under the Greater Mekong Subregion framework and other regional partnerships.
The ministry also aims to improve the skills of tourism workers so they can provide higher quality services that meet international standards.
Laos’ tourism push comes as the country gains recognition as an affordable travel destination, with Indie Traveller magazine ranking it among ‘26 Amazing Cheap Places You Should Travel to in 2026.’
According to the magazine, budget travellers in Laos spend an average of USD17 to 25 per day, while mid-range travellers spend around USD35 to 45, including accommodation, meals, and local transport.
The publication also highlighted Laos’ rich culture, outdoor activities, and improving tourism facilities, while preserving its rural charm.
This recognition adds to previous accolades, with Luang Prabang named among Asia’s top destinations by Travel+Leisure and Smart Travel Asia, while the country has drawn attention for eco tourism and community based tourism initiatives.
