JAKARTA — Microsoft’s $17.5 billion pledge in India for the next four years is its biggest single-country bet in Asia so far.

No previous deals in places like Japan, Indonesia, or Malaysia come close — those topped out at around $2–3 billion each.

This investment builds on a $3 billion promise from earlier in 2025. Most of it will go toward new data centers, starting with a huge one in Hyderabad by mid-2026. That site will be Microsoft’s largest in India, roughly the size of two cricket stadiums. It aims to handle cloud and AI needs for businesses and governments across the country.

India’s government platforms will get an AI boost as well. E-Shram and the National Career Service will use Microsoft tools to support 310 million informal workers.

Features will include job matching in local languages, résumé builders, and skill-trend forecasts, which could help migrant workers find stable jobs abroad or settle into new communities with better opportunities. Social protection coverage jumped from 24% in 2019 to 64% this year, partly thanks to these systems.

Training is also a major focus. Microsoft doubled its goal to train 20 million Indians in AI skills by 2030. They have already reached 5.6 million since January, leading to 125,000 jobs or startups.

In the wider Asia-Pacific region, this investment towers over smaller commitments like $1.7 billion in Indonesia or $2.2 billion in Malaysia. It positions India as a key tech hub, preparing workers for a job market rapidly shifting with AI. No larger Asia investments have appeared in reports as of December 2025.

“As AI reshapes the digital economy, India remains committed to innovation anchored in trust and sovereignty,” said India’s Minister of Electronics & Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Microsoft has previously championed Singapore as one of the global leaders in AI adoption. The Southeast Asian country is currently on par with Norway and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with at least three out of five Singaporeans using AI in their daily work or learning.
