JAKARTA - Chinese AI and tech giant Huawei is entering Indonesia with a lot of partnerships in AI and cloud infrastructure involving Indonesia’s telecom players, Telkomsel and Telkom.
During its Jakarta summit this last week, Huawei said it is working with Telkomsel on projects aimed at helping Indonesian industries use digital tools more easily. Both companies say better access to training and new technologies could also support workers as they adjust to shifts in the job market.
They also plan to expand their infrastructure by launching a 4th Availability Zone (AZ) in the Jakarta region in 2026, on top of the existing three.
“Huawei Cloud is not just a technology enabler, but a long-term digital transformation partner for local enterprises,” the company said in a press release published on December 4.
As for Telkom, Huawei said that it launched a joint CDN (Content Delivery Network) service with its local partner to improve local content distribution in Indonesia.
They also unveiled new cloud and AI platform offerings for the Indonesian market, including a “serverless AI-native lakehouse” called Data Fabric, a scalable data-warehouse service DWS 3.0, an improved database service TaurusDB, and AI-development platforms like ModelArts and Versatile.
The announcement came amid Silicon Valley’s push into the Southeast Asian region. Microsoft and Nvidia have been heavily investing in Malaysia in data centers and infrastructure. Singapore also ranks among the top three countries with high AI adoption worldwide.
Microsoft’s 2025 report shows that Singapore has a high level of AI use, with almost six in ten working-age adults using AI tools. In contrast, many countries in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines, have lower adoption, with fewer than a quarter of adults using AI in work or learning.
