JAKARTA - Indonesia’s domestic travel hit a seven-year high in 2025, with the statistics agency BPS recording over 1,2 billion domestic trips for the year, up 17.6% from 2024.
Speaking at a BPS press conference in Jakarta on Monday, February 2, Deputy for Distribution and Services Ateng Hartono said the surge reflected stronger local mobility around key holidays, including 84.6 million trips during the Lebaran period and 73.7 million over Christmas and New Year holidays.
December 2025 alone saw about 105.98 million trips, a monthly gain of nearly 10%. BPS data show West Java produced the largest share of travellers in both holiday seasons while East Java was the top destination.
BPS said the 1.2 billion trips estimate was based on mobile-positioning data, not only household surveys, which explains why the data also captures large volumes of short local travel.
International tourism also bounced back closer to the pre-pandemic level. About 15.39 million international visitors came in during 2025, which is the highest since 2020, with ASEAN supplying the largest share (41.3% or roughly 6.36 million visitors).
Each of the international visitors spent approximately US$1,267 each, bringing in roughly US$13.82 billion in foreign exchange in the first nine months.
Bali was previously named the top destination in TripAdvisor’s 2026 global rankings, the first time a Southeast Asian place has done so. The island, which displaced London and Dubai on the year-end list, also won the honeymoon category and ranked high for culture and solo travel.
