KUALA LUMPUR - Antara reported, Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (KP2MI) Head Mukhtarudin met with Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo to strengthen cooperation in protecting and improving the quality of Indonesian migrant workers, especially those from Jakarta, at City Hall, last Wednesday.

Minister Mukhtarudin said the cooperation with the Jakarta government is an important step toward building stronger coordination in solving migrant worker-related issues.

He noted that protecting migrant workers requires the joint effort of both central and local governments as part of a comprehensive protection system.

“Improving safety, quality, and the promotion of migrant workers are the main focuses of this collaboration,” Mukhtarudin said.

He explained that both sides are committed to developing training and capacity-building programs to prepare workers for global demand, which is now shifting toward medium- and high-skill jobs.

Mukhtarudin described the collaboration as a strategic effort to produce a more skilled and competitive workforce suited to international labor market trends.

He added that demand for Indonesian workers is increasingly moving away from household jobs toward technical and professional sectors.

“For that reason, we express our gratitude to the Governor of Jakarta for his commitment and collaboration in improving the quality of Indonesian migrant workers,” Mukhtarudin concluded.

The Jakarta Provincial Government pledged full support for national efforts to build a skilled and competitive workforce ready to meet global labor market needs.

“We want to prepare Jakarta’s workforce to compete in upper-middle sectors such as welding, hospitality, and engineering,” Pramono said.

He said the Jakarta administration will continue working with the central government to create more overseas job opportunities for residents in countries such as South Korea, Japan, Europe, China, and the Middle East.

Pramono also stressed that the government is responsible for protecting all migrant workers, including those who leave independently, and ensuring their safe return home.
